We are so grateful to PetSmart Charities for their continued annual support of BARCS. This year, we were awarded two grants in support of our lifesaving programs: Adoption Preparation and Increased Access to Care for underserved pet owners in Baltimore City. PetSmart Charities' funding, totaling $214,500, will sustain several positions that focus on medical care for our animals so our team can get them ready to be adopted as well as help us with our mission to provide access to basic veterinary care for pet owners in need.
Now that BARCS has moved into our new shelter in Cherry Hill, PetSmart Charities has enabled us to provide access to care through our Intake Prevention Program so that pet owners have the necessary resources to be able to keep their beloved pets.
Thanks to PetSmart Charities' investment, the grant will fund veterinary and surgical staffing. In addition, with this new Increased Access to Care grant, we are now able to offer basic veterinary care to owned pets in targeted zip codes and host a PetSmart Pet Wellness Day so we can provide basic vet checks, vaccinations, microchips, spay/neuter surgery vouchers, grooming, and other pet services for free.
These grants also provide support for our adoption program; in 2019, BARCS adopted out around 4,500 animals. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, all adoptions are now done virtually or via in person appointments at our shelter.
BARCS is a nonprofit organization serving the animals and residents of Baltimore City. We were founded in 2005 to find loving homes for Baltimore’s homeless pets and decrease the city municipal shelter’s euthanasia rate, which at the time was a disheartening 98%. In the past decade, BARCS’ lifesaving efforts have proven to be challenging and rewarding, resulting in a current save rate of more than 90% in 2019. This progress has been made possible by creative programs, community efforts and lifesaving medical funds. PetSmart Charities’ investment in BARCS lifesaving mission and programs will help to further increase lives saved in Baltimore.
