Griffey's Second Chance

Pets with families who love them should not find themselves homeless when resources and solutions exist to help them—and that includes our new temporary boarding program for families in crisis, Keeping Pets With Families. Senior pets are particularly vulnerable to sometimes severe medical conditions that can be costly, putting their beloved human family members in a tough financial spot.

Today, we want to thank The Grey Muzzle Organization for their generous gift towards this special program. This award will help more senior animals stay in homes with families who love them. 12-year-old Griffey is one of those animals.

Both Griffey and his beloved mom were diagnosed with cancer. On top of that burden, his mom recently broke her clavicle and is uncertain if she will ever be able to return to work. While trying to care for her own ongoing needs, poor Griffey was struggling with a high-grade mast cell tumor in his rear leg. As her only companion, Griffey is also her service dog.

Unable to afford veterinary care while on disability, she reached out to BARCS to see if we could help Griffey. Our hearts melted when we met this loving pair. Our veterinarian ran extensive tests to determine the best course of action for Griffey, and it was decided that amputating his cancerous limb would be it.

Griffey was able to have the surgery and recovered under his mom’s loving care. As they are both cancer survivors, they are truly battling the disease together. His mom reports that they both are doing well, and that she is forever grateful to BARCS and the Grey Muzzle Organization.
