Love: It's About Quality, Not Quantity

Imagine spending your golden years at home with your loved ones. You're not a young pup anymore, a bit achy perhaps, but you feel safe and warm. You have your favorite spot by the TV, your cozy blanket, and, of course, your comfy bed, surrounded by the love of your family. This is your life. But one day, things change. You're going somewhere unfamiliar—a shelter—and suddenly, the future is uncertain.

This is the reality for many senior pets who, for various reasons, find themselves in shelters. Unlike puppies, they have limited time to offer to a new family. They may also have age-related health conditions, adding to the challenges they face in finding adoption. Prospective adopters may worry about the time these angels have left on earth. However, as one family will tell you, love is not about quantity but about cherishing the time you have.

This is Missy's story—a tale that, against all odds, ended with a Happy Tail:

“Our second BARCS baby was Missy “missing a leg” Elliott. This three-legged cutie, formerly known as Tank, was adopted to be a companion to our first BARCS chi, Biggie Smalls.

“We adopted her as a senior at age 14. She had three legs, about five teeth, and cataracts in one of her eyes, but we knew she was ours the minute she was put in our arms. I remember my daughter saying, 'Mom, I don’t care if she lives two years or two months, I just don’t want her to spend the rest of her life without a home.' That sealed the deal.

“She loved coming back to BARCS to visit friends and get loads of attention. We had Missy for three years when we finally had to say goodbye at age 17 in 2018. I have zero regrets adopting a senior, and would do it all over again. Missy was an incredible dog, and such a sweet little golden girl!

“Let her be the lesson not to let a senior pet dissuade you from adoption! She lived so much life in those years with us.”

Big thanks to Tank’s family for showering her with love during her golden years, making each moment unforgettable. Though her time with you was brief, it was incredibly meaningful.

Let this heartwarming tale stand as a testament to the incredible love that senior animals bring into the lives of the families who embrace them with open homes and hearts.

Adoption fees are waived for senior pets 5 years and older through our Love Lasts Forever Program.
