Mr. Elmer Made My House a Home

From Catherine E.:

I adopted Mr. Elmer (now named Potter) 11/20 last year and took him home 11/27/2020. When I adopted him, he was riddled with skin issues and both kinds of ear mites, and all of his paws had open wounds, but he was the SWEETEST and snuggliest boy!

His skin has since changed, but he has not. Ever since his skin started healing, I get so many compliments on his fur and am told how he is "just a beautiful dog." He gets called handsome or beautiful nearly every time we pass a stranger. He’s always complimented at the vet’s office because of how well behaved he is, and we even get a good boy discount because of it (which thank goodness because we are frequent flyers there)!

I struggle with anxiety, depression and ADHD, and he has made it infinitely better. Last winter was really rough for me. I ended up spending a lot of time alone and Potter is what got me through that. I love his little snuggles, his excitement whenever I say his name and give him pets or every time I grab his leash to go outside. He’s also the reason I have made so many friends in my neighborhood!

My family was shocked that I was adopting a senior dog, but I honestly don’t know if I will ever adopt a non-senior again. They’re so calm and loving, and, in Potter’s case, they can be incredibly active but also love to lounge around watching movies and enjoy leisurely strolls around the neighborhood. Every shelter dog has been through a lot, but senior dogs most of all deserve a loving home to spend the rest of their days in. The cute little puppies and young dogs will always have adopters waiting, but the senior animals are often forgotten about and left in shelters for a much longer time. While it can be a little bit more pricey because of vet bills at the start, I believe senior dogs are the absolute best companions and I will continue adopting them for the rest of my life. There is nothing like coming home from a long day at work to find a pup waiting for you, tail-wagging, at the door.

There is no doubt that Potter has changed my life for the better in nearly every way possible, and while I still have bad mental days here and there, he is always happy to provide snuggles, kisses and love. Adopting Potter is by far the best decision I have ever made; he has made my house my home.
