Harper
A month ago, we shared Harper’s story with you. This sweet girl had been found tethered with a chain to a tree in the woods behind a house. She was so thin that she could barely walk, and her legs were stained with urine and feces.
Harper received immediate medical care here at BARCS and quickly went to a loving foster home where she could be monitored around-the-clock. A week later, though, she suddenly took a turn for the worse. Harper could no longer keep food down; she was lethargic and vomiting. A visit to the emergency vet determined that her blood sugar levels were dangerously low and she was severely anemic. She was kept overnight at one of our Franky Fund partner hospitals for further monitoring while she received fluids and supportive care. By the next day, Harper was showing signs of improvement; but then, her condition began to go downhill again a few days later. A return trip to the hospital found that her stomach was distended, likely from a foreign object.
Harper was very weak at this point. Due to her frail body and low blood sugar, there was concern that she wouldn’t survive the surgery. After much deliberation, we decided that we had to try for Harper. She was transferred to another Franky Fund partner hospital who could perform the emergency surgery late at night as her foster mom said a tearful goodbye, thinking she may never see her again.
We’re thrilled to share that Harper, our incredibly resilient girl, had a successful surgery! She stayed at the hospital for a couple days to make sure she was okay, and then she was happily reunited with her foster family.
Today, Harper has gained significant weight! She loves to sit next to her favorite human on the couch, enjoys adorning a new sweater everyday to keep her cozy, has quickly learned “sit,” and is eager to learn more. She is still visiting our vets regularly for close monitoring and is on several medications and supplements, but Harper is getting stronger everyday.
Harper’s dedicated foster family has been providing her with endless love and support throughout this emotional journey. We know that she is receiving the best possible care in their loving home and should be ready to find a family of her very own soon.
Thank you so much to everyone who has donated to Harper’s medical care. We truly could not have saved her life without your generosity.
